“The Phantom of the Operatory”-Overview and Update in Pharmacology for Dental Professionals: Presented by Thomas A. Viola, R.Ph. C.C.P

 Course Description:

Throughout the course of their everyday practice, dental professionals must frequently draw upon their knowledge of Pharmacology. However, armed with a relatively brief exposure to such vast subject matter, many dental professionals have difficulty retaining this knowledge throughout their career. This program will provide dental professionals with an overview of the basic principles of pharmacology and the classes of drugs used in the current therapy of most common disease states. Special emphasis will be given to drugs administered in dental practice, as well as to drugs which may impact dental healthcare.

 Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Explain basic pharmacokinetics and describe how pharmacokinetics and related factors affect a drug’s ability to produce a therapeutic effect.
  • Identify drugs listed on a patient’s medical history and be able to discuss their basic mechanism of action, pharmacologic effects, principle therapeutic indications, potential adverse reactions, potential drug interactions and specific contraindications.
  • Review the etiology of common organ system disease states, describe the classes of drugs used in their treatment, and discuss considerations important to patient management.

Speaker: Thomas Viola, R.Ph. C.C.P.

In addition to his daily practice of the profession of pharmacy, Thomas Viola also serves the dental professions as a clinical educator, published writer and professional speaker. Tom is a member of the faculty of eight colleges, as well as several national board exam review courses. He is a contributor to several dental professional journals, with pharmacology columns appearing regularly in General Dentistry, AGD Impact, Access Magazine and RDH Magazine. In addition, Tom currently serves on the Advisory Board for General Dentistry and as the Subject Matter Expert for Mosby’s Dental Drug Reference. Tom has presented hundreds of continuing education courses, nationally and internationally, in the areas of dental pharmacology and local anesthesia.
